A shift in Norse-Marvel relations(hips)
Mar. 18th, 2013 10:19 pmPSA: The Marvel relationships that include only Norse-based characters have switched tags on AO3. Some of them were originally entered as “Character A (Marvel)/Character B (Marvel)”, but that didn’t follow guidelines. They’re now “Character A/Character B (Marvel)” to match other fandoms with similar cases.
Examples:
- Loki (Marvel)/Thor (Marvel), now -> Loki/Thor (Marvel)
- Loki (Marvel)/Sif (Marvel), now -> Loki/Sif (Marvel)
Tags that have not changed, because at least one character is clearly part of Marvel-verse:
- Jane Foster/Thor
- Loki/Tony Stark
- Phil Coulson/Sif
- Fandral/Hogun/Sif/Volstagg
I’m announcing this because the autocomplete has dropped the (Marvel) tags back down below the generic, shared tags, and I don’t want Marvel folks to get confused! If you have questions, drop me an ask.

Kate Bishop Relationships (Ask)
Mar. 6th, 2013 09:50 pmladymercury10 asked: Do Young Avengers count? If so, how about Kate Bishop? (If not, let's go with Pepper.)
Kate always counts. Let’s do relationships, because she doesn’t have a lot of freeforms yet (and because I don’t wrangle YA or Hawkguy):
1. Kate Bishop/Jessica Drew (1)
2. Kate Bishop & Phil Coulson (0)
3. Ava Ayala/Kate Bishop (1)
4. Kate Bishop/Bobbi Morse (1)
5. Kate Bishop & Natasha Romanov (2)
6. Clint Barton/Kate Bishop/Original Male Character(s) (0)
7. Kate Bishop/Original Male Character(s) (0)
8. Clint Barton/Kate Bishop/Bobbi Morse (3)
9. Kate Bishop/Scott Lang (1)
10. Kate Bishop/Eli Bradley (47)
11. Kate Bishop/Cassie Lang (15)
12. Rikki Barnes/Kate Bishop (1)
13. Clint Barton/Kate Bishop/Noh-Varr (2)
14. Clint Barton & Kate Bishop (15)
15. Kate Bishop/Mia Dearden (2)
16. Kate Bishop/Karla Sofen (0)
17. Kate Bishop/Kara Zor-El (1)
18. Kate Bishop/Noh-Varr (4)
19. Kate Bishop/Tommy Shepherd (35)
20. Clint Barton/Kate Bishop (86)
21. Kate Bishop/Natasha Romanov (1)
22. Kate Bishop/Darcy Lewis (0)
23. James “Bucky” Barnes/Kate Bishop (1)
24. Kate Bishop/Stephanie Brown (3)
25. James “Bucky” Barnes/Clint Barton/Kate Bishop (3)
I left the numbers in again and also bolded a few of the lines to show something interesting. Though 3 our of 4 of Kate’s most popular relationships are with guys (Clint, Eli, and Tommy), she appears to be a popular option for rarepair femslash. Now, these numbers aren’t perfect, because they only count uses of the canonical, not syns. But they do paint a broad picture that might be worth looking into.

Rhodey Relationships (Ask)
Mar. 6th, 2013 09:41 pmshinykari asked: First of all, how much do I *LOVE* that Darcy has all the tags? *flails* OKay, okay: James "Rhodey" Rhodes, who does NOT get enough lovin' in fandom. I'm just sayin'.
1. Maria Hill & James “Rhodey” Rhodes
2. Rae LaCoste/James “Rhodey” Rhodes
3. Rumiko Fujikawa/James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Tony Stark
4. Pepper Potts/James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Tony Stark
5. Darcy Lewis/James “Rhodey” Rhodes
6. Pepper Potts/James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Steve Rogers/Tony Stark
7. Jarvis (Iron Man movies) & James “Rhodey” Rhodes
8. James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Steve Rogers/Tony Stark
9. Bruce Banner/Pepper Potts/James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Tony Stark
10. Nick Fury/James “Rhodey” Rhodes
11. Pepper Potts/James “Rhodey” Rhodes
12. Maria Hill/James “Rhodey” Rhodes
13. Pepper Potts & James “Rhodey” Rhodes
14. James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Tony Stark
15. James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Natasha Romanov
16. Clint Barton & James “Rhodey” Rhodes
17. James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Original Female Character(s)
18. James “Rhodey” Rhodes & Tony Stark
19. James “Bucky” Barnes/James “Rhodey” Rhodes
20. James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Steve Rogers
21. Clint Barton/James “Rhodey” Rhodes
22. Bruce Banner/James “Rhodey” Rhodes
23. Bruce Banner/Pepper Potts/James “Rhodey” Rhodes
24. Pepper Potts/James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Steve Rogers
25. Carol Danvers/James “Rhodey” Rhodes
26. James “Rhodey” Rhodes & Original Female Character(s)
27. Bruce Banner/James “Rhodey” Rhodes/Tony Stark
I left the numbers in because it’s easier, and because wow does this need to change! (Though Maria & Rhodey, I didn’t know that was a thing. Need to check that out….)

Sister, Sister
Feb. 18th, 2013 01:52 pm(This month, I'm contributing to #femslash february by highlighting female character-centric and femslash-centric tags at AO3.)
As I mentioned yesterday, female-centric gen, especially family, is as often sidelined as femslash. One relationship that does stand the test of canon - though not necessarily the test of fandom - is that of sisters.
Relative to mothers and daughters, media is rife with sisters: Buffy and Dawn Summers, the Miyazawa girls, Kate and Susan Bishop, Morgana and Morgause, Hinoto and Kanoe, Susan and Lucy Pevensie, Padma and Parvati Patil. (It helps that sisters aren't fridged to provide drama at the same rate mothers are, though it certainly does happen to them.) Sisters are still nowhere near as numerous as brothers (or brother and sister pairs), but they do exist.
Sometimes fandom latches onto these sisterly relationships, and sometimes it doesn't. I'm often surprised by which relationships are adopted and which ones leave barely a ripple as they pass through fandom's collective consciousness. So today I'd love to hear about your favorite sisters. Got a favorite canon or work? Leave me a note!

Has anyone else noticed that there's a fannish meme been going around for a while now to have grown men derogatorily refer to their own or other men's behavior as being "like a teenage girl"? When did this become a Thing? And why?
I've met so many teenaged young women, and they're all very different people, most of them quite awesome. To me, "like a teenage girl" means "like a student taking 5 languages", "like an gymnast who practices 6 hours a day", "like a philanthropist who organized her whole grade into making Valentines cards for the kids at the local Children's Hospital", "like the stage manager for her school's musical", "like a camp counselor who teaches kids how to swim", "like a folk dancer who writes dances for her group", or "like a programmer who's designing her own video game".
Every time I read "like a teenage girl" said by a character with a sneer in their voice, all it does is make me not like that character anymore. Is that the intent? Then it's working.
So, hey! Here are some tags on AO3 where I've found positive, complex portrayals of teenage women:
* Himemiya Anthy/Tenjou Utena
* Kate Bishop
* Simoun
* Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: Legend of Korra
* Young Wizards
* Sophie Hatter
* Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
(Freeform non-canonical of the day: tag search for "Teen* Girl*" [warning: not actually uplifting])
I'm sure there are lots of positive tags I've missed. Got any suggestions?

Collect 'em all?
Jan. 26th, 2013 08:34 pmI have an... extensive collection of Avengers portmanteaus and smushnames and other ways of referring to relationships in the fandom, as a side effect of needing to syn them to the appropriate canonicals (and sometimes having to ask friends if they know what a tag means).
So, question! Looking at this list, is there anything missing? (You can also just look for your amusement. I know sometimes I giggle.)
( below a cut 'cause they got loooong )

* shinykari answered: I’ve also seen Bucky/Nat called Soviet Soulmates, but it looks like you’ve got most of them!
* erindizmo said: I’ve seen SHIELD Daddies for Coulson/Fury…
* tawghasa answered: I’ve seen Agent America for Phil/Steve, but everyone quickly switches to Capsicoul.

My friend the &
Jan. 16th, 2013 09:12 pmI really love how gen fans are latching onto the & symbol in relationships. (Heck, I was thrilled when it was finally introduced!) Got a father-daughter drawing, or a buddy vid, or a team story? You, too, can be filterable on relationships! Just put an & everywhere you'd put a / for romancin' or sex.
Why yes, I do totally follow the Phil Coulson & Darcy Lewis tag. Two great tastes that taste great together! (Alas, hardly anyone tags for it. Yet.)
